From https://www.ebay.de/itm/165218176742:

Condition: Item has been inspected and cleaned, inside and out, the backup battery was replaced, and both the system as a whole, and the included RF36 drive have passed their built-in tests. To further demonstrate its functionality, OpenVMS 7.3 has also been installed on it.

This auction is for a Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) VAX 4000 model 105A system with 128MB of RAM, an RF36 DSSI disk drive and an internal CDROM drive. (Although the case says 100A, both the self-tests and OpenVMS correctly detect the upgraded processor.) As with all -A variants of the model 100 family, it sports two DSSI and one SCSI bus, as well as support for Q-Bus devices via a suitable adapter kit (available separately) and an external enclosure.

This unit has been inspected and cleaned, inside and out, and both the system as a whole, and the included RF36 drive have passed their built-in tests. To further demonstrate its functionality, OpenVMS 7.3 has also been installed on it. See this YouTube playlist for the HD videos of these tests, along with links to plain-text captures of the systems self-test results (due to eBay's links policy, these cannot be included directly here). Please note that the internal retaining clips of two of the expansion slots' covers have cracked internally, hence their no longer sitting flush with the rest of the back panel.

Please also note that this auction only includes the following:

  • the VAX 4000-105A system as described above, with non-expiring PAKs / licences for the OS and the installed Layered Products;
  • two DSSI and one SCSI terminator;
  • one AUI-to-10bT Ethernet transceiver;
  • one DEC MMJ-to-Cisco-style RJ45 serial console cable; and
  • a USB thumb-drive with burnable disc images of all of contemporaneous OS Installation Kits and Layered Products that I have — including VAX/VMS 6.2 to 7.3, but also DEC OS's for their MIPS and Alpha systems.

Should you also want the optional M9405-A Q-Bus adapter with matching cables and/or additional DSSI or SCSI drives, just let me know.

Although this item will be packed securely prior to shipping, given the age of this product (and as this is a private sale), no guarantee is provided, nor will returns be accepted. (I am, of course, happy to answer specific questions, but before asking, please check out this playlist to see examples of what I consider to be secure packing. Thanks.)

Also, please note that shipping prices given here for destinations outside of Germany are only estimates and will depend upon the final destination and the type of shipping class and insurance you want, however costs for DHL International, including insurance of up to EUR 3000 should be around 87€ (for countries within the EU), 98€ (to the UK) and 148€ (to the USA); for certain countries (including Australia, the USA and Canada), to which DHL will only ship by sea, Hermes may be another more practical, if also slightly more expensive option. Ultimately, shipping will be at cost, and calculated at time of invoicing. If in doubt, please get in touch before bidding.

Other items to be listed in the coming days and weeks include a couple of VAX 4000-100As, a VAXstation 4000 VLC, multiple MicroPDP-11/73s plus many other classics by DEC, Commodore, Apple, SUN, SGI, SUN, Atari and IBM. For DEC, OpenVMS and OS Theory-related books, as well as custom cables and battery adapters for DEC and other older machines, please see my current listings.
